Let's Have a Conversation about Schools!

Well, here I am. I talk alot about engaging students with technology so I need to model some engagement. This is my first attempt to have my own blog and the purpose is to engage the community in a conversation about the school district. My only fear is that I won't have the time to comment often enough, so I am trying to schedule a time during the week to read comments and respond. Be patient with me since my days and evenings are really full right now with all sorts of obligations.

Since the Board of Education has approved the tentative list of projects to be considered for the SPLOST I want to answer your questions about those projects or hear your input about other proposed projects. By doing that we can focus these first conversations on that. My job is to provide information, so what do you want to know?

  1. Muscogee ES did not get what was promised after the very first SPLOST was passed. It was at the bottom of the list and it seems that by the time the construction crews got to Muscogee, they were out of money. I think Muscogee should get what was originally promised before Muscogee parents are asked to vote in favor of another tax.

First, I will like to give Dr. Andrews a big welcome to our school system and a big thank for taking the challenge. I know it's not an easy task. So let me say it one more time; Welcome and thank you!

Now, I have no problem voting in favor of another tax for the school system as long as the money directly benefits the kids. Sometimes, the school board and the people at the school district office, get lost in the bureaucracy and all the fancy meetings, and forget their number one priority, the kids. For example, I agree that it would be great to have the latest technology in all the school and air conditioning in all the gyms but, I believe keeping the paraprofessionals in Kinder and 1st grade will directly benefit the kids.

We also have to recognize one thing. No matter how much money we put into the school system, if parents are not involve and take personal responsibility for their kids education, millions and millions of dollars will be of no help.

  3. We're here for the kids has a very good point. The latest technology will not be of any use if there are not enough adult hands in the classroom to teach the children how to use it...

There are numerous positions in the school system designed to help teachers teach better - academic coaches and instructional specialists - who make substantial salaries. Some of these individuals work very hard and make a huge difference in the classrooms of the teachers they serve. However, most do not make nearly the difference a first grade papraprofessional makes - providing the support needed in a hands-on manner to allow the teacher time to work with students on improving reading skills. If SPLOST were utilized to keep first grade paraprofessionals, it would have a better chance of being successful in our current economy.

  4. Hello Dr. Andrews! I would like to know if you have ever considered Twittering. I think for the parents that are Tweets, it would be a great way to get quick updates and news. I recently read that many cities throughout the nation are using Twitter as a form of communication about weather, school closings, and unexpected situations. Just curious.
    Thanks!
Oh, PS. For parents that do not Twitter, once the word gets out, it may persuade them to hook on and be more in tune with what's happening!

  5. Dr. Andrews,
I am a teacher who is relocating to the Columbus area and in need of a job! I have been looking on the internet trying to find any publicity regarding the hiring status of MCSD for the 2009-2010 school year. In light of the current economic conditions, I am aware that many systems are not hiring new staff or are very delayed in allowing new hires for the upcoming year. I am wondering how MCSD is fairing in comparison so as to be well informed during my job search.
    Thank you for your time.
