Employees Children

Whether or not to require employees to pay tuition for their children to come to Muscogee County Schools if their residence is outside of the district is another one of those issues that was placed on the table as we talked about budget cuts and where to get additional revenues. In our discussions nothing was sacred and we laid out every area in which we thought we could save money. We were not prioritizing or determining at that time the pros and cons of each suggestion, but just brainstorming ideas. There has not been a formal decision on this nor a recommendation to the board about this. Again, with the federal stimulus money to assist us in saving jobs, I hope we do not have to charge tuition for employees' children. This was just part of the discussions we were having as we desperately looked for ways to reduce the budget or raise revenue.

  1. How soon will a decision on this matter be made?

  2. I definitely feel that the SPLOST is needed, despite the persistent perception of incompetence by many members of our school board (true of not, unfortunately it will be a significant obstacle to overcome). My question deals with the timing of the election. I realize that no formal move has yet been made to ask for a vote, but the projected date is in September. Especially in this economic environment--why go to the expense of a special election, rather than just have the vote during our normal November election cycle (less than two months after the September date)? While the amount of money spent on a special election might be small in comparison to other expenses, that does not seem to be prudent use of taxpayer funds--the very taxpayers you are trying to persuade to vote in favor of the SPLOST.

  3. The question has been asked when a decision will be made on tuition for employees children, paraprofessionals, etc. Now that the General Assembly has finished its work the budget has gone to the Governor for his signature. We should have the revenue numbers soon. Then, we can seriously begin the budget process. We should also know exactly how much federal stimulus money we will receive. If it looks like we will have to do any of those two things we will let people know asap. The very latest is by June 30 when the budget must be finalized, but we actually should know in the next month.
